Confusion_of_TonguesI want to explain why I call the emergent church the Seeker-Sensitive Purpose Driven Church for the Carnal Nature of Mankind.

Seeker-sensitive– This refers to the goal of the emergent church. They are sensitive to the needs of the unchurched. On the surface there is nothing wrong with being “sensitive” to the needs of the lost. We should go out and be Jesus to the world in love and truth. The emergent church takes this way too far in how they cater the church to the lost and trample the Bible’s clear commandments about not loving the world (1 John 2:14-161 John 2:15-17, James 4:3-5). They are so relevant to society that the Word of God is irrelevant. The biblical way of spreading the Gospel is deemed old by them, therefore they think God needs their works to help spread His Word.

Purpose Driven–  We hear so much about vision from these leaders. Vision is what drives these people as they project their goals for the church. This is the burning desire that makes this movement tick. I’m not saying that this aspect is bad; on the contrary, I view it as very good. We all need to cast vision; however, that vision must be grounded in the Word of God.

Carnal Nature of Mankind– This refers to our sin nature, our love of the world, our love of evil, our natural rebellion against God, and how we, as humans, want to be a god. The Seeker-Sensitive Purpose Driven Church for the Carnal Nature of Mankind transforms the church into a circus of bait-and-switch, creating an atmosphere of deception in order to appeal to the lost. The leaders of this movement do not believe the Gospel is enough to reach the lost anymore. They believe that we must cater to the world by using anything the world deems popular to attract people into the church where they can meet Jesus. They rely upon themselves to be the vessel to lead people to the church rather than simply following the Bible’s example of going out witnessing the good news of Christ and making disciples of new believers (Matthew 28:18-20). By appealing to the carnal nature of mankind, these seeker-sensitive relevant pastors omit the offensiveness the Gospel is to the world (Matthew 10:32-36) by replacing it with stage shows, gimmicks, contests, sex talk, marriage counseling, pep talks, financial planning, etc… using anything to lure people into the church. They substitute the power of the Holy Spirit to convict and draw mankind unto Himself with a new relevant power of human reason. They accomplish this goal by creating and using very well thought out programs, relevant sermon series, professional sounding bands, and simply urging people to say “Jesus” as the new way to win souls to Christ (2 Timothy 4:2-4).

The Gospel is offensive to our carnal nature because it tells us that we are unable to redeem ourselves and that we must be saved by the one method that God established for us. The Gospel shows man as depraved and incapable without God’s conviction even to understand that he is lost  (1 Corinthians 2:13-15). The natural man cannot seek God (Romans 3:10-12). These two facts alone are very offensive to the unchurched because it stats that we as humans:

  1. We are sinful (evil) by nature, therefore no one is good and worthy of Heaven.
  2. We cannot save ourselves by good works, simply saying, “Jesus” (Matthew 7:21-23), or by volunteering.
  3. It is the Holy Spirit that draws us to Himself and not mankind that comes to God by our own merits.

The emergent church appeals to the carnal nature of mankind by ignoring the Bible’s clear commandments about the world (Romans 12:1-3, Galatians 6:13-15, Ephesians 2:1-3, Colossians 2:6-9, Titus 2:11-13, James 4:3-5, Ephesians 5:4). It is appealing because it allows mankind to make his own rules thus telling God what is good enough for God. In other words, they allow man to become as a god by changing what God said in order to suit mankind’s needs and wants. The Seeker-Sensitive Purpose Driven Church for the Carnal Nature of Mankind allows mankind to remain in the pit of the world just because the name of Jesus is proclaimed. As long as people profess the name of Jesus, and the church is growing, it is evidence to the Seeker-Sensitive Purpose Driven Church for the Carnal Nature of Mankind that God must be blessing them because of their new methods. This new twist on the old sinful nature of mankind is just as appealing today as it was thousands of years ago. The only things that have changed is the terminology and technology.

An age old sin problem

Universal Language, Babel, Confusion

1 Now the whole earth 1used the same language and 2the same words.

2   It came about as they journeyed east, that they found a plain in the land aof Shinar and 1settled there.

3   They said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks and burn them thoroughly.” And they used brick for stone, and they used atar for mortar.

4   They said, “Come, let us build for ourselves a city, and a tower whose top awill reach into heaven, and let us make for ourselves ba name, otherwise we cwill be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.”

5   aThe Lord came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men had built.

6   The Lord said, “Behold, they are one people, and they all have 1athe same language. And this is what they began to do, and now nothing which they purpose to do will be 2impossible for them.

7   “Come, alet Us go down and there bconfuse their 1language, so that they will not understand one another’s 1speech.”

8   So the Lord ascattered them abroad from there over the face of the whole earth; and they stopped building the city.

9   Therefore its name was called 1aBabel, because there the Lord confused the 2language of the whole earth; and from there the Lord scattered them abroad over the face of the whole earth. [1]

When I was pondering writing this blog, the Tower of Babel came to mind when I thought about the foundation of the Seeker-Sensitive Purpose Driven Church for the Carnal Nature of Mankind. I see a striking resemblance in these two man-made accomplishments.

Attitude– The old Satanic lie (Genesis 3:1-5) of “we can be like God” is seen in both the Tower of Babel and the Seeker-Sensitive Purpose Driven Church for the Carnal Nature of Mankind. The builders of the Tower of Babel were working to reach Heaven by their own rules. They had vision, and they were united in their goal to reach Heaven. They followed their leader’s vision to its end without question. Does this sound familiar?

Sin– The people building this city did wondrous works that were appealing to the people. This was from the desire of man to reach God by man’s methods vs. God’s way to Him. The builders sought to reach God by their rules and by their works. They expected God to accept them because of their works. If they did not expect God to accept them, then why did they build this tower to Heaven?

We will- In spite of what God said in His Word, the leaders of the Seeker-Sensitive Purpose Driven Church for the Carnal Nature of Mankind insist that because of their leadership lives are being changed. The attitude of “we will lead, lives are being changed because of our work, and people are coming to Christ” overrides God’s commandments.  The problem here is the “we” attitude. These leaders ignore God when God’s Word condemns their actions but uplift God’s Word when it suits their own visions. This reminds me of “They said, “Come, let us build for ourselves a city, and a tower whose top will reach into heaven, and let us make for ourselves a name, otherwise we will be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.” The leaders of the emergent church say,” Come, let us build a church that is relevant, a church that will use culture to lead people to Jesus, we shall make a name for ourselves by reaching out to the world using everything popular, otherwise the people will never know Jesus because of all the religious church people who do nothing because they are set in the old ways.

All the good works the emergent church does, all the thousands of numbers of confessions stating “Jesus,” all the grand buildings, and all the volunteers do not pardon these churches from the condemnation God’s Word puts upon them and their love of the world. God clearly told us not to love the world and not to mix light with darkness (Philippians 2:14-16). The outcome of the emergent church is confusion just like what happened at the Tower of Babel. God’s Word is there in front of them, but they choose to ignore it in favor of man’s wisdom.

  1. Nicely written! It is quite tragic to see a pastor become so captivated by becoming a PDC that they abandon preaching sound biblical doctrine to their congregations.

My personal experience with this over the last 3 years started when I departed from Faith Church in New Milford, CT, because of the pastor’s commitment to being a purpose driven church. The context of Scripture in several sermons have been so misinterpreted that it’s just horrible to hear it proclaimed as biblical when it is not. I do hope that will change and rather quickly too.

In the PDC book, I could not find any solid, biblical examples of what was advocated in the book. I did find however, several examples of contradiction to Scripture.

I would truly love to see the entire PDC movement come to a screeching halt and see these people come to churches and hear pastors that are not ashamed to declare the whole counsel of God.

Brother, I have been listening to Perry preach for a long time and I know that he has met Jesus. I have read your comments here and wonder if you have met Him. Jesus reclined at the table with the pimps & the prostitutes: He met people where they were, He was sensitive to the seekers. The Pharisees called Him out for it. I want to be Christ-like and not Pharisaical. Do you? Love you by His Grace and pray that peace, joy and love abound in your life.
