It’s time for me to check in and see what NewSpring  Church Self-help Center is teaching my community this week.

I think this Brad Cooper clip is good example of what goes on at NewSpring Church:

Interesting little pep talk from Brad Cooper. It’s catchy, and he makes some good points that I agree with. I do think that Noble and his staff of preachers make some very good points in their sermons, but it’s what isn’t said that is the problem many times. I would love to be reporting how Perry Noble teaches repentance from sin, instructs his people on holy living, and how he feeds his flock with sound biblical teachings. My problem is not with their music (I like guitars and drums in the worship service; I do, however, have a problem with using non-Christian music like AC\DC, etc. to worship God), the size of the church, or with breaking the sermons down to a level for everyone. The problem I have with these types of NewSpring lectures is they do not practice what they preach. These pep talks generally leave you full of worldly relevant chatter while being almost void of any true scriptural teaching.

Let’s examine some of Brad Cooper’s more colorful moments in his NewSpring ministry:

Brad Cooper’s twisted defense for cussing

My concern with Brad Cooper from NewSpring Church

Brad Cooper’s foul mouth and poor judgment

Do words really matter?

When Brad Cooper used the relevant “hip and cool” acronym BAMF, was he trying or training to live for Christ? After pressure from several people (myself included) in my community and from the internet, Brad Cooper stated BAMF meant Big Audacious Mighty Fortress in a Tweet, but no where on his blog, NewSpring’s web page, or during FUSE did I see any apology for his actions. (If he did apologize I missed it.) He simply justified his actions by altering a filthy acronym instead of simply apologizing for being so irresponsible. How many teens researched this acronym only to discover the filthy meaning of Cooper’s relevant talk? (1 Thessalonians 5:21-22) All one has to do is follow the time line of events concerning Cooper’s BAMF statement to see that outside pressure made him change his tone while in public. I’m glad that he stopped using this filthy acronym, so I’m not complaining about that. I am pointing out that his poor choice of words caused problems.(1 Peter 3:10-12, Romans 16:18-19) In my opinion, the most alarming part of this BAMF controversy was how NewSpring Church handled this mess: total silence from Perry Noble and his leadership team. How hard would it have been to 1.) Make a public statement to the church from the stage since Cooper’s action was in the general public. 2.) Add a statement on the church website correcting Cooper’s actions during Fuse, his tweets, etc. 3.) Apologize to the parents who trusted Brad Cooper to be an example and teach their children about God during FUSE.

2 Timothy 3:1-5 (NASB)
1 But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will come.
2 For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy,
3 unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good,
4 treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God,
5 holding to a form of godliness, although they have denied its power; Avoid such men as these.

If these men would submit to the authority of God and preach the true Gospel of Jesus Christ, then our community would see a real change. As it stands now, this false gospel of life change only gives a temporary false hope based upon our works. It is my prayer that Perry Noble and his staff truly repent. I would love to see the pure Gospel pour out of NewSpring Church into my community. I would rather be blogging about how NewSpring Church preaches the whole council of God and teaches true repentance than blogging about the  many errors spewing from the leadership of this church.

Where the life change gospel breaks down

The blunt truth about the gospel and the false god of purpose

People do not need pep talks and services designed as entertaining mirror images of popular culture. People need to hear the Gospel and see the power of God manifest in our lives. When God saved us, He made us new creatures (2 Corinthians 5:17). He gave us a desire to live for Him (Romans 13:13-14, John 15:18-20, 1 John 2:15). This is a life change the world cannot acquire through works, volunteer service, repeating the name “Jesus,” etc. This change is only given by God when the Holy Spirit draws us to repentance. The key to this real change is preaching the pure Gospel and depending on the Holy Spirit to draw sinners to repentance. If we preach a gospel that is based on relevant culture and entertainment,  then we are depending on our works to appeal to the carnal nature of man in order to draw them to repentance.

Instead of trying to transform the filth of the world into a Christian culture, we need to be transformed from the world into a follower of Christ.

3 John 1:11 (NASB)
11 Beloved, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. The one who does good is of God; the one who does evil has not seen God.

1 John 2:15-17 (NASB)
15 Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world.
17 The world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives forever.

Discernment is telling the difference between right and almost right.

1 Cor 5:1-13 An unpopular teaching by today’s Christian standards

Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

When does worship become sin?
