Apprising Ministries draws your attention to an interesting tweet last night from New Calvinist leader Mark Driscoll, who heads the Acts 29 Network:

Teaching @ a Foursquare pastors conference tonight & thankful for the invite. (Online source)

Here’s more about this event from Lake Samm Foursquare Church:

I want to invite you to our next “church planters tribe meeting” on May 27th. This meeting is a gathering of church planters past, present and future, and anyone who has a heart to team up with church planting in any way.

I hope you will come and enrich our time with your presence.  I know that we can be mutually encouraged as we learn how to engage the darkness and bring The Light of the world to all people through church planting. (Online source)

More than enough reason for very serious concern; when people who claim to adhere to Reformation theology, then also encourage the younger sector, whom they are particularly popular with, to embrace the spurious spirituality of e.g. Ignatius of Loyola. For actual history shows he founded the Jesuits who were functioning during the Reformation, on order of the Pope, as a militantly pro-Roman Catholic Church spiritual Gestapo Unit. Let’s also keep in mind here that Richard Foster’s spiritual teachings are watered-down enough that he’s even included with the Living Spiritual Teachers Project alongside New Age mystics like Deepak Chopra and Marianne Williamson and even The Dalai Lama.(source)

The online apologetics and discernment work Apprising Ministries continues to keep you updated on Warrengate since Dr. John Piper suffered a lapse in judgment by inviting Purpose Driven Pope Rick Warren to be a keynote speaker at the Desiring God Conference 2010. Frank Turk’s snark aside, not everyone gets it.

In his Coming Soon – The John Piper And Rick Warren Controversy Cameron Buettel, a name familiar to AM, weighs in:

When John Piper invited Rick Warren to be a keynote speaker at the 2010 Desiring God Conference, we could feel the explosion in the blogosphere from as far away as Denmark… I would ask that we would operate out of zeal for avoiding bringing reproach on Christ’s Name, out of zeal for the furtherance of the Gospel, and out of love for John Piper’s ministry which has abundantly blessed many of us.

What I would ask is that you watch the video below and privately express your concerns to Dr Piper by sending your e-mails to mail@desiringGod.org… (Online source)

You can see the video and read the rest of what Buettel says right here. For me, in addition to Warren’s sinful and double-minded ecumenicsm, my concern with chameleon-like Rick Warren is what pastor Bob DeWaay calls Warren’s “file cabinet orthodoxy.” By this DeWaay means:

You stick it in a file cabinet, and someone questions you about it, you pull it and show [it to] them. Then you put it back in there; but it really doesn’t influence what you do, how you write, how you preach, how you speak. And it’s not very useful orthodoxy. [1]

No doubt Rick Warren’s welcome to his views; but that’s the heart of the matter, what are they? For example, I’m a former Roman Catholic whom God saved by His grace alone; through faith alone; in the finished work of Christ alone on the Cross, and through nothing I have done brought me into the glorious freedom of the sons of God.

As the Lord would will, I would later go on to become an ordained Southern Baptist minister, as is Rick Warren. So Warren’s stance on the apostate Church of Rome, which condemned the very Gospel of Jesus Christ itself in its answer to the Reformers at the RCC Council of Trent, has very personal meaning to me.

Imagine my confusion, as I touched on before in Rick Warren Is Whatever He Needs To Be, when I read in a 2004 interview of Rick Warren by Modern Reformation:

Theologically, I am a monergist and firmly hold to the five solas of the Reformation. (Online source)

Yet a year later I read from a 2005 report on Rick Warren by Pittsburgh Post-Gazette:

“Now I don’t agree with everything in everybody’s denomination, including my own. I don’t agree with everything that Catholics do or Pentecostals do, but what binds us together is so much stronger than what divides us,” he said. “I really do feel that these people are brothers and sisters in God’s family. I am looking to build bridges with the Orthodox Church, looking to build bridges with the Catholic Church,….” (Online source, emphasis mine)

And now Dr. John Piper tells me of Rick Warren:

Well I put my cards totally on the table here, um I have invited Rick Warren to come to the Desiring God National Conference this fall. And he’s coming. Now I will get a lot of criticism for this from my Reformed brothers, because…not because Rick Warren is openly non calvinistic or non reformed.

I do think he’s deeply theological. He’s a brilliant man. He wouldn’t have the church he does or the Peace Plan, or all the influence he does… (as cited Online source)

But since when has the view that the Roman Catholic Church is “in God’s family” ever been consistent with Reformation theology; its man-made dogma repudiates each of the five solas of the Reformation? And so I find myself asking again: Which Rick Warren am I supposed to believe?

HAS THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH REALLY CHANGED?

WHAT DOES THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH TEACH ABOUT THE DOCTRINE OF JUSTIFICATION?

Apprising Ministries has been keeping you updated on Warrengate; and here in this post, I point you to the Iron Sharpens Iron website of my friend Chris Arnzen. Now Phil Johnson, who works closely with Dr. John MacArthur and blogs at Pyromaniacs has weighed in on Warrengate.

From the ISI website:

Phil Johnson, president of “Grace To You,” the radio, television & tape ministry of world-renowned radio Bible teacher, author & pastor, Dr. John MacArthur, will address the theme: “The John Piper-Rick Warren Controversy: A Balanced Response“.

As many of you have heard, it was no “April Fools Joke”, as our guest Phil Johnson originally thought. John Piper, highly sought after conference speaker, popular Reformed author, founder of the ministry Desiring God (see www.DesiringGod.org), and pastor of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Minneapolis, MN (see www.HopeInGod.org), has invited controversial Southern Baptist pastor and best-selling author Rick Warren to speak on the theme “Thinking Purposefully for the Glory of Christ: The Life of the Mind and Global Reality”, to the 2010 Desiring God National Conference (see
http://www.desiringgod.org/Blog/2323_more_details_about_our_national_conference/
). Warren is on a speaking roster that includes such powerful defenders of the Reformation as Al Mohler, R.C. Sproul, Thabiti Anyabwile and John Piper himself.

This has come as a shock to many who greatly value John Piper and his ministry due to the fact that Rick Warren has publicly taken positions on various important issues and has spearheaded activities that most folk in the Reformed/Sovereign Grace community consider to be antithetical to Reformational thinking. In addition to Warren’s invitation to Barack Obama (then Senator), a militant pro-abortionist and pro-homosexual rights advocate, to speak at his church in December, 2006, for his Global Summit on AIDS, many of Warren’s theological positions are disturbing to many who love and admire Piper.

As Michael Horton, cohost of ” The White Horse Inn” radio broadcast and editor-in-chief of Modern Reformation magazine , so aptly put it:

“I admire Rick Warren’s zeal for reaching non-Christians and concern for global challenges. I respect him for giving away much of his income for charitable purposes.
“At the same time, I believe that his message distorts the gospel and that he is contributing to the human-centered pragmatism that is eroding the proper ministry and mission of the church… While I applaud his concern for social justice, I am concerned that he confuses the law with the gospel and the work of Christians in their vocations (obeying the Great Commandment) with the work of Christ through his church in its ministry of Word and sacrament (the Great Commission)…

“…When USA Today asked him why Mormon and Jewish leaders are involved in his pastoral training programs, Rick Warren reportedly said, ‘I’m not going to get into a debate over the non-essentials. I won’t try to change other denominations. Why be divisive?’ (USA Today, July 21, 2003). Rick Warren endorses a host of books, from New Age authors to Emergent writers to conservative evangelicals. So why not include Calvinists?…

“…We can be so proud of getting the gospel right while we don’t bother to get the gospel out to those who need it. Furthermore, we can be self-confident in our theological integrity while ignoring the Word of God when it impinges on questions of social concern.Yet the answer is not ‘deeds over creeds,’ but to be re-introduced to the creeds that generate the deeds that are the fruit of genuine faith. Getting the gospel right and getting the gospel out, as well as loving and serving our neighbors, comprise the callings of the church and of Christians in the world. However, confusing these is always disastrous for our message and mission.” (Read entire article here: http://www.whitehorseinn.org/archives/425.html).

While our guest Phil Johnson is extremely concerned over John Piper’s discernment in inviting Rick Warren to speak at his 2010 Desiring God National Conference, he is equally concerned and dismayed over the slanderous reactions of some brethren who deem Piper himself to be a heretic, or worse, a non-Christian, over this news.

Phil Johnson, also maintains “The Spurgeon Archive”, the largest collection of Charles Haddon Spurgeon resources on the world wide web, and his blog site,http://teampyro.blogspot.com/.

Jesus is not my homeboy, JC, or my buddy! Jesus Christ is the Lord

Some people like to portray Jesus like a high school best friend instead Jesus the Lord. It’s like having a best friend who is the son of a powerful politician. Because of his father, we can get a pardon for all of our mischievous law-breaking deeds. With just one whimper to his father, this version of Jesus makes our lawless acts not so bad.  This Jesus belittles sin because he is our buddy and our personal life coach who understands that there are no perfect people. This Jesus is there to guide us as we live in the world, and he is there to teach us how to enjoy modern day culture while still carrying the name of Christ.  This “hip” and “cool” Jesus that allows mankind to remain in the death pit of the world’s sins is a Judas goat, paving the way to Hell with compassion, understanding, relevance, and the need to be accepted.

Jesus Christ is the Lord of lords, and He deserves our respect. It’s disrespectful to call Jesus Christ anything but what He calls Himself in His Word. When we stand before the Lord we will not address Him as homeboy, JC, or my buddy.

Philippians 2:8-11 (NASB)

8 Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.9 For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name,10 so that at the name of Jesus EVERY KNEE WILL BOW, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth,11 and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

I must ask you which Jesus do you follow? Are you following the Jesus of the purpose driven emergent mega-church movement who is a life coach that understands your short comings, or are you following Jesus Christ who must be Lord of our lives who demands repentance from sin? Are you following a Jesus who demands holy living or one who understands that you are not perfect, making it alright if you remain in your sin because after all you are human? Are you truly sorrowful when you sin because God hates sin, or do you make excuses because everyone sins? Are you under conviction to repent when you sin, or do you say a little prayer while you keep on sinning? If your Jesus does not demand repentance from sin, then you better check which Jesus you follow because I guarantee you that you are following a false Christ.

Matthew 7:21-23 (NASB)
21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter.
22 “Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?’
23 “And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; DEPART FROM ME, YOU WHO PRACTICE LAWLESSNESS.’

The slang-speaking homeboy “buddy” Jesus allows his followers to enjoy the world as if nothing has changed. The life change experience given by this false messiah is a temporary life change to satisfy your need for religion today, but the truth about your salvation will be revealed in Heaven when you stand in judgment before the Lion of Judah.
